Eating well on the go is important to your health goals
Even if you had the perfect nutrition plan that told you exactly what to eat and when to eat in order to reach your health and fitness goals, you probably still wouldn’t follow it. It’s difficult to eat healthy on the go.
Why is it so hard to change the way we eat? There are actually 2 major reasons.
Reason #1: Habits
Daily food and activity related actions. Most of us grew up and spent the majority of our lives eating the quick and easy choice with all the tasty additives not caring about the nutritional value. These habits are hard to break without a thought out, logical plan.
Reason #2: Busy Lives
You might start down a path of change, eating better and planning meals, then life just gets in the way. You might have an unexpected business trip or family health emergency, suddenly all your planning is out the window. Eating becomes an afterthought. You don’t have a good support system to hold you accountable. When times get tough, people turn to fast food.
And why not: It’s quick, it’s easy, and it tastes good.
One of the keys in eating for a fit healthy body is having healthy, nutritious food available when and where you need it.
What can you do to Prepare for the unknown and have healthy food ready?
There are a few things you can do. Each option depends on your willingness, time, money and goals.
Weekly Meal Prep
What if I told you that every time you are hungry and ready to eat all you had to do was pull a container or 2 out of the refrigerator and great it up and you would have a healthy nutritious meal in minutes. Sounds awesome doesn’t it?
This is Weekly Meal Prep. You basically pick one day of the week, most people pick Saturday or Sunday, plan your menu for the week, buy the food and prep it in containers so it is ready to go when you are. Granted this takes a good bit of time and energy to plan, but the results are worth it. Remember that you get out of it what you put into it.
Daily Meal Prep
So, you don’t have time, space or the organization skills to prepare for a whole week. Another option is daily meal prep. This in most cases can take you about 30 minutes either before you go to bed or first thing in the morning. Steam some veggies, grill up some meat and cook some grains. This doesn’t take much longer than running to the local burger joint, it costs less and you know exactly what you are preparing.
For both weekly and daily meal prep options, make sure you have proper place to store your meals, a good single size cooler and some ice packs, you don’t want your hard work and good food to go to waste.
Have Others Prep for You
Maybe you are just too busy or there is some other reason that you cannot prepare your own food, maybe you are just a horrible cook. There are an increasing number of services that will do the meal prep for you and ship everything right to your door. Many grocery and convenience stores are also beginning to provide healthier “Grab-n-go” options, from full salad bars with hot delis and soups to ready-to-go yogurt parfaits and fruit and meat “Bistro boxes” or salads. This is a more expensive option but can you really put a price on the feeling you get when you hit a health or fitness goal?
Bonus: Eating Out
Sometimes it is difficult to avoid eating out. It might be a business function, family event or even a date. Unplanned restaurant meals will happen, it’s how you handle them that will make a difference. A growing number of chain restaurants now have low-calorie or healthy choice menu items. This is helpful in making good choices, but if the restaurant does not have these, focus on veggies and lean protein avoid anything fried. Always order dressings and sauces on the side and don’t eat until you are stuffed.
There you have a few tips on how to maintain a healthy nutrition plan while on the go. We could go into a lot more detail on all of these options and maybe we will in the future. In the mean time you can do a google search for “Healthy Meal Prep” and you will get hundreds of ideas.
